ASK A
Devine’s Pharmacy Pharmacist
Q: How can I protect my child from getting the flu?
A: While there’s no protection against every germ at school, there are ways to reduce your child’s risk for illness.
Teach kids to wash their hands before eating, after using the bathroom, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing their nose. They should lather up well for 15 seconds to 20 seconds — about the time it takes to sing the ABC song.
Also, place travel-size hand sanitizer in their backpacks, and postpone play dates with sick kids. Keep children home from school if they have flu symptoms, which may include:
• Fever • Headache • Chills • Coughing
• Runny or Stuffy Nose • Sore Throat
Q: My children’s backpacks seem very heavy. Should I be concerned?
A: Carrying a heavy backpack can lead to back pain, muscle fatigue and soreness, and other problems. Try these ideas for lightening the load:
|
|
• Pack it smart. Do not let your children carry more than 15 percent of their body weight in their backpacks, and put the heaviest items closest to your child’s back.
• Buy a pack with a waist strap. Make sure your child uses it for heavy loads.
• Choose a backpack with wide straps that are padded for comfort.
• Teach kids to bend with both knees when picking up heavy packs.
• Tell your kids to carry their bags evenly. Carrying a pack on only one shoulder may boost the risk for back pain in adolescents.

• Eating a nutritious breakfast can sharpen a child’s memory and even improve school test scores.
• Turn off the TV around preschoolers. Playtime is important for brain development and helps kids become better learners.
• Reward good grades with quality time, such as a family trip to the zoo. It’s more meaningful than money.
• Children ages 6 months to 19 years need an annual flu shot. October and November are the best times to receive a flu shot.
• Researchers formulate a flu vaccine each year based on which viruses they expect to be most common.
• Beat the flu with lots of rest, plenty of fluids, and pain relievers to soothe body aches.
